Visa Information
Depending on your country of citizenship, you may or may not need a visa to enter the United States.
The most recent information about visas is available from the US State
Department's Visa Waiver Program web page,
and the US Customs and Border Protection's Electronic System for Travel
Authorization (ESTA).
If you do need a visa, please apply for it well in advance in the meeting. If you need a letter of
invitation to apply for a visa, please contact the LOC by email.
We have registered
this conference with the US
National Academies International Visitors Office (IVO), which provides
some additional information for visiting scientists, and which may be able to help scientists coming to
an international conference get expedited visa appointments if the usual process is too slow.
Schedule
The meeting will begin on the morning of 20 September (Monday). Please plan to arrive on Sunday 19 September, or earlier.
As of now, we do not have any events scheduled for Sunday evening because arrival times will vary, and may be
late in the evening for some participants.
Conference Hotel
All sessions and most other events will be held at the Westmark Hotel in downtown Fairbanks.
We have a commitment for up to 75 rooms at a special conference group rate of $69 per night plus taxes.
The Westmark Hotel will charge this same room rate for up to 3 days before and after the conference, and
any room stays before or after this time period will be charged at their regular room rate. Hotel reservations
must be made by September 5 to get this special rate. You can book your hotel room on the hotel's website directly.
To do that, go to the Fairbanks Westmark Hotel website and select your arrival and departure dates.
Click on the text "Click here for special rates", and then enter "UAFG091910" in the Group Code box to get the conference rate.
Then click on the "Check Availability" button and follow the screens to reserve your room.
Within the USA you can call the hotel toll-free 1-800-544-0970 or directly at +1-907-456-7722
to make a reservation, and mention the group name "UAF-Geophysical Institute". You can also contact them by fax
at +1-907-451-7478. Use the same group code mentioned above.
Airlines
Several airlines fly into Fairbanks. The majority of flights are on Alaska Airlines, and
you can easily book tickets on their website. Northwest/Delta fly from Minneapolis and Salt Lake City, although the flights are seasonal.
Frontier Airlines is flying to Fairbanks now (from Denver), but as of now their seasonal flights to
Fairbanks stop in September 11, although Anchorage flights continue until October. We have no special
airfare arrangements or discounts available. If you can get to Anchorage, it is only a short hop up to
Fairbanks. Service between Fairbanks and Anchorage is provided by Era Alaska. Of special note to travelers from Europe,
Condor Airlines flies once per week (Thursdays) to Fairbanks from Frankfurt am Main,
this is by far the fastest and cheapest way to travel between Europe and Alaska. Flights depart on
Thursdays in each direction, so you could fly to Alaska on 16 Sep and return immediately after the
meeting on 23 Sep. Prices will vary, of course, but as of April the price quoted was about EUR 800 (US$1025).
China Airlines flies non-stop flights from Taipei to Anchorage.
Currently (April) the flights are 3 times per week.
Tourism
If you want to see some of Alaska on this trip, you are advised to do it before the meeting because the
weather will be better, and many tourist sites are closing in mid to late September as winter approaches.
See the Visitor Information link for more information, and the Westmark Hotel also offers a number of
local tourist activities that you can book directly with the hotel. Reservations should be made by phone
or fax to avail of conference group rate.
